Pinot Gris is most likely a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir and it is of French origin. It is a very complex variety of vine, it requires particular attention both the cultivation and the production in habitat in which the climate is cold and the soil compatible. The regions suitable for this type of vine are the Friuli Venezia Giulia region and in particular in the Collio and Eastern Hills of Friuli, Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto and Lombardy. The taste of Pinot Gris differs according to the area of production. In places with constant and cold climate you will have a wine with a good body and structure and a velvety and soft taste, if instead the place is characterized by considerable thermal excursions, the Pinot Gris will have a fruity taste and a strong body. Pinot Gris can also have a different color, depending on the vinification techniques. In contact with the skins has a copper color, while without obtaining a wine with light and clearer tones.

Ortrugo was confined to the taste of grape cutting at least until the mid-Seventies, when a family of the Piacentino with a history dating back to the XVI century, selected the old vines to produce an Ortrugo in purity. The birth of two new clones dates back to those years, thanks to the collaboration with University of Piacenza, which were then replanted, starting from the Eighties, a little throughout the territory: a small success, for a grape vine indigenous white, from always present in the territory, become today the most bred, in front of any type of international variety. And this, not withstanding, with the emergence of the Malvasia of Candia Aromatica, the vineyards of Ortrugo were until the Seventies large lye radicated. The wine has a light straw color tending to greenish and has a dry test or a bite with a bitter aftertaste. It is typically, and traditionally, produced in sparkling, but lately, to meet the tastes of a wider audience, are also on the market still version of Ortrugo.
